Captain U.S. Navy/Commanding Officer, Naval Surface Warfare Center - Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD)
Captain Godfrey “Gus” Weekes is the Commanding Officer of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) headquartered at Dahlgren, Va. He assumed command of the division in November 2016. He is a native of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands and previously served as senior engineering duty officer detailer at Navy Personnel Command at Millington, Tenn.
He graduated from St. Croix Central High School in June 1988, after which he joined the Navy as a sonar technician, submarines in October 1988 under the Advanced Electronics Program. After Basic Electronics and Electricity, “A” School, and two “C” Schools he was assigned to the USS OKLAHOMA CITY (SSN 723) in October 1990. While attached to the USS OKLAHOMA CITY he was selected for the Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) program. After BOOST, he attended Savannah State University, Savannah, Ga., where he received his Bachelors of Science in Mathematics and his commission through Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps.
His operational assignments include serving as the Assault Division Officer, Auxiliaries Officer and Assistant Navigator on USS KEARSARGE (LHD-3) and as the Military Detachment Officer in Charge aboard USNS JOHN LENTHALL (TAO-189).
Following his tour aboard USNS LENTHALL, Captain Weekes attended the Naval Postgraduate School where he received his Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering and laterally transferred to the engineering duty officer community in 2003. He served as a systems engineer in the office of SPAWAR Systems Center, Charleston, S.C. from December 2003 to December 2006. He served as COMVAVSURFLANT’s deputy C5I readiness officer from December 2006 to November 2009. He went on to serve in PEO LMW/LCS - PMS 420/505 as LCS mission module deputy PAPM logistics from November 2009 to February 2013. He served as the NSWC Port Hueneme Air Dominance Department Officer from March 2013 to September 2014 and the Land Attack Department Officer from July 2014 to June 2015.
Captain Weekes’ awards and decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal (2 stars), Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 stars), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various personnel and unit citations and awards.
